2025 MOST Masterclass

Maestra Helena Dix (singers & répétiteurs)

Australian-born Helena Dix has secured her name in leading roles on operatic stages around the world. Triumphs include the role of Maria in NOSTALGIA,at Théâtre Royal de la Monnie, title-role NORMA at the Metropolitan Opera, scenes from DER ROSENKALIER and ARABELLA with Scottish Opera, the title-role LA STRANIERA for Chelsea Opera Group, the Countess LE NOZZE DI FIGARO and a solo recital with Seattle Opera, Lady Macbeth MACBETH, Musetta LA BOHEME, Elisabetta in ROBERTO DEVEREUX and the title roles NORMA, LUCREZIA BORGIA, SUOR ANGELICA & MARIA STUARDA with Melbourne Opera, her role debut as Vitellia LA CLEMENZA DI TITO with National Opera, Canberra, Miss Jessel THE TURN OF THE SCREW for Garsington Opera and her Sydney Opera House debut as Helmwige DIE WALKÜRE with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra conducted by Simone Young.

Other engagements include her Metropolitan Opera stage debut as Alice Ford FALSTAFF, the title role in Foroni CRISTINA REGINA DI SVEZIA for Wexford Festival Opera, Oldenburg Staatstheater and Chelsea Opera Group, the title role ARIADNE AUF NAXOS for the Longborough Festival, Elettra IDOMENEO and Odabella ATTILA for Staatstheater Nürnberg and Lubeck opera and Erste Dame DIE ZAUBERFLOETE for State Opera of South Australia,

Concert engagements have included Verdi Requiem with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Orff Carmina Burana at the Royal Albert Hall and at the St Magnus Festival. Helena has also recorded the Verdi Requiem with the Bach Choir and Missa Sabrenesis by Howells with the BBC Concert orchestra and The Bach Choir, both released on Hyperion records.
She has recently stepped into a new mentoring position as Artistic Patron of Opera Scholars Australia, frequently gives masterclasses around the world and continues to judge many competitions including The Herald Sun Aria.
In 2022 Helena was awarded a Fellowship by the Royal Academy of Music for her continued excellence and contribution to her craft.

Ziggy Harris

Born in Armidale, baritone Ziggy Harris holds a Master of Music (Voice & Opera) from McGill University’s Schulich School of Music, studying with Brett Polegato and Louise Pelletier, supported by the Fellows Scholarship Program. He is a finalist in the 2026 MTO German-Australian Opera Grant and 2025 Prix D'Art Vocal Wirth, and a semi-finalist of the Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship. His roles include Il Conte, Don Giovanni, Papageno, Dandini, and Abbate. by Jassy Husk. A graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Ziggy earned his Bachelor of Music (Voice) with Distinction, studying with Dr. Simon Lobelson, Andrew Dalton, and coach/pianist Alan Hicks, having been awarded the Pete Davidson and Patricia Long Scholarships.

Matthew Hilberts

Matthew Hilberts (baritone) completed his Bachelors of Music performance in 2022, and his Masters of Music Studies (opera performance) in 2024, both at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, The University of Sydney. Matthew studied with Dr. Simon Lobelson for both his degrees.

Performing arts have always been a part of Matthew’s life. Learning piano from his mother, and studying ballet, tap, jazz, and contemporary dance throughout most of his school years. He began studying voice formally in 2012 with Patricia Woods, and completed his A.mus.A. in 2022, and in 2025 to complete his L.mus.A.

Sky (Haneul) Kim

Korean-Australian soprano Sky Kim has pursued her passion for opera, completing the Bachelor of Music Performance at the Queensland Conservatorium and is currently pursuing her Master of Music Studies (Opera Performance) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. At the Queensland Conservatorium productions, Sky has studied and performed roles such as Tytania (Britten), Knabe 2 (Mozart), and Nursemaid 1 (Kurt Weill). Sky has also performed as an artist with Springboard Opera, performed the roles of Giannetta and Adina (Donizetti) at the Mediterranean Opera Studio and Festival in Sicily, and as Cupidon (Offenbach) for Sydney Conservatorium's opera production.

Recently, Sky competed at the 2025 Australian Singing Competiton semi-finals and was awarded the Andrea Catzel Award.

Molly Ryan

Molly Ryan is an emerging soprano from Sydney who was recently named the winner of the MTO German Australian Opera Grant and Audience Prize. Molly looks forward to joining the ensemble at the Hessisches Staatstheatre Wiesbaden for the 26/27 season. In 2025 Molly has appeared as Contessa (Le Nozze di Figaro) in Vienna with Prague Summer Nights Music Festival and L’Opinion Publique (Orphée aux enfers)with Sydney Conservatorium and NIDA. Additionally, with the opera school, Molly created the roles, Mother (Zhen) and Menarche (O’Donoghue) in the world premiere, MOTHER. Alongside her recent success in Melbourne, Molly received a finalist prize in the 2025 Herald Sun Aria, the Merenda Legacy Prize in the 2024 IFAC Handa Australian Singing Competition, 2ndprize in the 2024 Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship and 1st prize in the 2023 Demant Dreikurs Song Competition.

Julia An

Julia An is a Bachelor of Music student majoring in Collaborative Piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, studying with Dr. Theresa Leung, Dr. Eun-Jung Byun, and Mr. Clemens Leske. She is a regular performer with voice and instrumental students in Conservatorium concerts and an emerging opera répétiteur, recently working on Verdi’s Nabucco with the CoOperative Opera. She has participated in masterclasses with leading international artists, including Dr. Nico de Villiers and Dr. Francis Greep. Julia is also a recent recipient of the Henderson Travellers Scholarship, which supported her to attend Rocky Ridge Music Festival in Colorado, where she studied under Dr. Andrew Campbell.

Cara Eccleston

After completing her undergraduate degree in solo piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2024, Cara was accepted into the Collaborative Piano Master's program at the Sydney Conservatorium where she is currently studying under Dr Theresa Leung and Dr Eun-Jung Byun. Cara has participated in masterclasses with Graham Johnson OBE, Dr Nico de Villiers, Dr Francis Greep and Dr Gracie Francis. Cara performs regularly with opera singers and instrumentalists and has performed with the Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestra and Wind Symphony. Cara also holds a Diploma of Language Studies, majoring in French.

Teoman Ayhan Özbakır

Teoman Ayhan Özbakır is a pianist and flautist entering his third year at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he studies a Bachelor of Performance in classical piano. Dedicated to both performance and collaboration, he has served as a repetiteur with the Rockdale Opera Company since the beginning of the year. In this role, he contributed to the company’s productions of Otto Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor and Verdi’s La Traviata. Teoman is committed to developing his artistry through diverse musical experiences, honing his skills as both a soloist and an ensemble musician, while also pursuing his passion for conducting at the con and externally.

Hans Sangtoki

Hans Sangtoki is a pianist and conductor completing a Bachelor of Music (Collaborative Piano Performance) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he studies under Dr Theresa Leung and Dr Eun-Jung Byun. He has accompanied in the studios of Maree Ryan AM, Anke Hoeppner-Ryan, and Russell Harcourt, and performed continuo in Elena Kats-Chernin’s The Coronation of Poppea. His recent projects include Ravel’s Histoires Naturelles with Simon Lobelson. A two-time recipient of the Mollie Neal Memorial Award, Hans has participated in masterclasses with Graham Johnson OBE, Dr Nico De Villiers, and Dr Francis Greep. He will undertake Conducting Honours in 2026 with Ben Northey and directs the Cantate Deo Youth Orchestra in Sydney.

2023 W. Allen Ford Masterclass

The W. Allen Ford Masterclass focused on the development of not only opera and classical singers, but also répétiteurs.

In an industry first, Thursday's W. Allen Ford Masterclass featured renowned soprano, Amelia Farrugia, and distinguished pianist, Bradley Gilchrist, working with emerging répétiteurs (Jake Cheong, Eklavya Mudgil, Jaimie-Lee Xu, and Ashly Zhang), and singers (Anastasia Gall, Matthew Ren, and Eden Shifroni) in the same session.

Amelia Farrugia

Amelia Farrugia is a renowned Australian soprano; since her professional stage debut in 1990, she has enjoyed a highly successful international career in opera, operetta, music theater, recital, concert events, television & recording. Amelia’s singing career has taken her around the world; she was honoured to join the roster of soloists at The Metropolitan Opera in New York, covering Renee Fleming as The Merry Widow & Anna Netrebko & Diana Damrau as Manon. This incredible opportunity enabled her to work alongside the world’s best singers, conductors & directors.

Bradley Gilchrist

Bradley leads a busy life as a freelance accompanist and vocal coach for auditions, recitals, recordings, broadcasts, examinations and concert performances. Bradley works extensively as a mentor for young vocal and instrumental Artists. He is Music Director of the Young Artist Programme at Pacific Opera and Music Director at Australia’s oldest Music Club, Music at Manly. Bradley was thrilled to be the Official Accompanist for the 2022 & 2023 Australian Singing Competition.

Singer

Anastasia Gall, soprano

Tasmanian born soprano, Anastasia Star Gall, has been the recipient of the Mary Jane Corderoy Trophy for Lieder Song 2023, John Luscombe Scholarship for Vocal Studies 2022, Patricia Lucas Music Achievement Scholarship 2022, Helpmann Family Fellowship Scholarship 2022, and Opera Australia Regional Student Scholarship 2015.
She has performed in masterclasses with Graham Pushee, Dr Maria Briggs, and Dr Graham Johnson OBE. Anastasia travelled to Vienna to perform as Barbarina in Mozart’s ‘Le nozze di Figaro’ at the Vienna Summer Music Festival 2022. She recently played the Erster Knabe in Mozart’s ‘Die Zauberflöte’ 2022, and performed the role of Drusilla in the Australian premiere of Elena Kats-Chernin’s ‘The Coronation of Poppea’ 2023.

Ziwei Matthew Ren, tenor

Ziwei Matthew Ren is a Chinese-Australian tenor who recently earned his Bachelor of Music Performance (Classical Voice) under the guidance of Dr. Rowena Cowley. Having returned from Europe as a recipient of the Henderson Scholarship, Ziwei has been an active performer at lunch concerts, recitals, and opera performances at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Additionally, he frequently sings in the St Paul’s College Choir as a Tenor Scholar. Notable roles include 'The Teapot' in 'L'enfant et les sortilèges' and 'Chinese Man' in St Paul College Choir’s production of 'The Fairy Queen.' Ziwei eagerly anticipates embarking on his Master of Opera in the upcoming year.

Eden Shifroni, soprano

Australian Soprano Eden Shifroni has completed a Bachelor of Music (Performance) and a Master of Music Studies (Opera Performance) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Her stage roles include Musetta in La Bohème, Suor Genovieffa in Suor Angelica, and Pamina, Papagena and Zweite Knabe in Die Zauberflöte. In 2023, Eden performed the role of Poppea in the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and NIDA production of L’incoronazione di Poppea, which was the Australian premiere of Elena Kats-Cherni’s re-orchestration of Monteverdi’s work. Eden was awarded the overall winner prize and audience prize in the Demant Dreikurs Lieder Competition (2022), The George Henderson Scholarship (2022 & 2023), was a finalist in the Elizabeth Todd Lieder Competition (2022), and received the Tinkler Award at the Australian Singing Competition (2023). She has participated in masterclasses led by Dr. Graham Johnson, David Miller AM, David Gowland, Graham Pushee and Paul Fitzsimon.

Jake Cheong

Jake is a first-year Masters of Music (Performance) student majoring in Collaborative Piano, currently studying under Dr. Jeanell Carrigan. With a background in Bachelor of Music (Performance) from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, he received the John and Dorothy Vimpani Pianoforte Scholarship and later the Clarence Addison Turill Scholarship from The University of Sydney in 2020. Jake is a seasoned performer and award recipient, having earned first place in an international music competition, leading to a performance invitation in Vienna. He was a finalist in the Sydney Eisteddfod Kawai Scholarship and secured grants from the Bouddi Foundation for the Arts for four consecutive years. Notable achievements include first prizes in the United States International Music Competition and the Golden Classical Music Awards, leading to a performance at Carnegie Hall in New York.

Eklavya Mudgil

Born in Delhi and raised in Sydney, Eklavya began playing piano at age 12. In 2018, he began studying as a private student with Dr Paul Rickard-Ford. Eklavya continued studying with Dr Rickard-Ford until 2022, when he completed a Bachelor of Music (Performance) Honours degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, graduating with First Class Honours. He is currently studying for a Master of Music (Studies) Performance degree at the Sydney Conservatorium with Dr Natalia Ricci.

Jaime-Lee Xu

Jamie-Lee Xu is a pianist, currently in her second year of the Master of Music Studies (Performance) degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, after completing her Bachelor of Music (Performance). She was awarded the Keith and Eileen Ong Prize for Piano on entry to her Masters degree. Additionally, she has received the John and Dorothy Vimpani Pianoforte Fund scholarship on entry to the Conservatorium in 2018, as well as the Molly Neale Memorial Award in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, Jamie-Lee was awarded the George and Margaret Henderson Scholarship, allowing her to attend a course at the Collaborative Piano Institute in the US. Jamie-Lee has had successes in 2022, winning both the David Miller Award and the Sydney International Song Prize. She is currently studying with Dr Jeanell Carrigan, specialising in a collaborative piano major. Formerly, she has studied with James Muir, David Miller, Natalia Ricci and has had masterclass experience with Graham Johnson, Christian Müller, Warren Jones, Rita Sloan, Arno Bornkamp and Amir Farid.

Ashly Zhang

Ashly is in her final year of the Master of Music Studies degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, majoring in Collaborative Piano. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano. Her primary teachers include: Dr Theresa Leung, Dr Jeanell Carrigan and Dr Bernadette Harvey.
As an emerging collaborative pianist, Ashly has voraciously sought opportunities to learn from and perform with singers and instrumentalists, in duo, chamber and orchestral settings. She has participated in many of the Australian Youth Orchestra’s nationwide chamber and orchestral programs from 2020-2023, and performs in vocal and instrumental recitals with students at the Conservatorium.

About W. Allen Ford

W. Allen Ford is first and foremost a music lover. He spent much of his professional life as an Industrial Chemist and carries a lifelong passion for his chosen musical instrument, the pipe organ.
For 25 years, Allen volunteered at Sydney’s Fine Music Station 2MBS 102.5 FM where, for eleven years, he was an integral part of the Young Virtuoso team which gave broadcast opportunities to performers as young as 6 and up to age 30.
Today, Allen's commitment to young artists endures. Through his generosity, we are able to connect young developing artists with practical training experiences that serve as stepping stones toward their chosen careers.
